The African Burial Ground Memorial Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity (EIN 92-3747978) and the philanthropic partner of the U.S. National Park Service. We are dedicated to honoring the more than 15,000 enslaved and free Africans interred at the African Burial Ground National Monument at 290 Broadway in Lower Manhattan — the oldest and largest known burial ground for people of African descent in North America, and a National Historic Landmark.

Our mission

Working in partnership with the National Park Service, the Foundation leads efforts to preserve both the site and the monument, and to advance the educational, civic, and programmatic opportunities tied to its significance to New York City and American history — ensuring the ancestors who rest there, and their contributions to the building of this nation, are never again forgotten.

What we do

• Restoration of the Memorial to Rodney Leon’s original design, and expansion of daily guided and self-guided tours for all visitors.
• K–12 education outreach — curriculum development for grades 4, 8, and 11, and school visits to the site.
• A digital archive and oral-history documentation project preserving this history.
• A planned Visitor’s Center with a permanent exhibit, a research library and archive, and community gathering space.
• A long-term vision for an International Memorial Museum & Education Center and an annual global symposium on African Diaspora heritage.
• Public programming and community events that engage the wider public in this history.
